About Respect on Campus

The University of Iowa is creating a welcoming environment that is committed to excellence, learning, community, diversity, integrity, respect, and responsibility. In doing so, the University has a commitment to encourage and protect the free expression of every student, staff member, faculty member, and friend on our campus. We strive to maintain a safe and supportive environment for students of every race, color, ethnicity, religion, age, disability, or sexual identity while nourishing a system of mutual respect. The inclusive community here at the University allows every individual to be treated with openness, mutual appreciation, and therefore respect. Reaching out and creating a welcoming environment for every member of the University community is a great responsibility we are committed to uphold.

Receiving respect means giving respect first. In this respectful climate, we must encourage anyone who witnesses forms of harassment or discrimination to report it immediately. This is an important step to help eliminate feelings of exclusiveness and demonstrate the importance of respect on our campus and in our community. Creating an inclusive environment will allow every student to openly share his or her feelings, attitudes, and beliefs, and in turn create lasting friendships and relationships. RESPECT. give it. get it.
